The elections yesterday brought us lots of new leadership, including new members of our local school board and City Council. Congratulations to all!
Newly elected Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education members include: Bob Eby (re-elected with 3,724 votes); Laura McLean (3,133); and Paige Marshall (2,754). Thank you for committing your time over the next four years to determining the future direction for our schools and taking bold steps in that direction. We look forward to working with you as a community of parents and other concerned citizens.
Newly elected City Council members include: Warren Gooch (3,761 votes); Rick Chinn (3,761); Kelly Callison (3,310); and former councilwoman Ellen Smith (2,991). We look forward to your work over the next four years, in concert with the Board of Education, to maintain the excellent school system we currently have and to go beyond that by improving our schools for this and future generations of Oak Ridgers.
If you haven’t already early voted, please do take the time today to vote in the general elections! Every vote counts, and your voice should be heard.
In Oak Ridge, 10 people are running for the four seats available on the City Council, and eight people are running for the three seats available on the Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education. Also, Oak Ridge will vote on whether to allow wine sales in grocery stores. To review all election items, please see a sample ballot (which includes the proposed amendments to the state constitution, as well as statewide and national races) on the Anderson County Election Commission website.
Please be reminded that the Oak Ridge School Board of Education meets this evening at 6:00 p.m. at the School Administration Building on New York.
Also, a thoughtful parent shared the ORNL charitable contribution funds matching information to remind any JMS parents who work at ORNL that they can have their contribution to the Direct Drive fundraiser doubled using the ORNL “charitable contributions” program. Please submit a form requesting the funds. Here is information on the community-outreach program.
Friday is the last day of the PTO Direct Drive fundraiser. You may, of course, donate funds at any time; however, to be counted toward your student’s homeroom tally for the donut party contest, completed forms and donations must be received by Friday. Thank you for your support!
You may bring your old books to JMS to support a Mobile Book Library. CDC teacher Lexie Scott is organizing JMS efforts to contribute to this resource that will provide students in Oak Ridge access to books over the summer. The plan is to target neighborhoods where students are less likely to have access to a nearby library. Ms. Scott will collect books at JMS, and volunteer Esther Parish will deliver them to the organizers.
The JMS school nurse reports that the clinic is needing 3-5 oz. cups, hydrogen peroxide, and lozenges (menthol and other). If you would like to donate any of these items, please send them to the clinic with your student or drop them by when you are visiting the school. Thank you!
